The first birth is the physical one (born of the flesh) and the second birth is the spiritual one (born of the Spirit). Those words plus a couple others mean the same thing. The phrase “born again” comes from a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, as recorded in John 3, where the Jewish leader “came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. When this happens, it means that we have been born again or born of the Spirit. Being born does not save someone, actually, literally, in this life, it means that those who bear children give birth to someone who now needs to be saved.
